How To Measure For Curtain Hardware

How to Measure Your Outdoor Patio or Pergola for Curtain Rods & Brackets

Installing outdoor curtain rods and brackets starts with accurate measurements. Whether you're adding outdoor patio curtains, pergola drapes, or weather-resistant, wide-width panels, proper measuring ensures a secure fit and a polished, professional look.

Step 1: Measure the Width of Your Installation Area

Determine where you will mount your outdoor curtain rod.

  • Measure the full width of the opening (post to post, wall to wall, or beam to beam) if you are installing as an inside mount (see illustration).
  • For better coverage and light control, add 4 inches – 12 inches (see illustration) beyond each side if space allows.
  • This allows outdoor curtains to fully close and stack back neatly when open.

Hint: Wider rods create better sun protection and privacy coverage when installed with an outside mount.

Step 2: Measure the Height for Outdoor Curtains

Decide where your curtain rod brackets will mount:

  • Ceiling-mounted (under pergola beam or structural beam)
  • Wall-mounted or post-mounted

Measure from:

  • The mounting point
  • Down to your desired curtain length (floor, deck, or slightly above ground)

Hint: For outdoor installations, it’s best to keep curtains ½–1 inch off the ground to reduce wind wear to the bottom and prevent moisture buildup.

Step 3: Determine Bracket Placement

Proper curtain rod bracket spacing is essential for outdoor durability.

  • Place brackets every 9 feet (maximum distance) for standard outdoor curtain rods.
  • In high-wind areas, consider closer spacing for added stability.
  • Always mount brackets into solid structural support (beam, post, or stud).

Hint: Most installations will have a center bracket support with 1 bracket at each end.

Step 4: Account for Outdoor Conditions

When measuring for pergola curtain rods, consider:

  • Wind exposure
  • Sun direction
  • Drainage and moisture
  • Obstructions like fans, lights, or beams

Outdoor curtain hardware should be rust-resistant and rated for exterior use, like our Moorea Outdoor Curtain Hardware.

Step 5: Double-Check Before Ordering

Before purchasing:

  • Confirm final rod length in inches
  • Confirm mounting height in inches, as this will determine your curtain length
  • Verify bracket count to account for any extras needed
  • Ensure you have proper mounting hardware for wood, stucco, or masonry

Accurate measuring ensures your outdoor patio curtain rod installation looks custom, functions smoothly, and withstands the elements.
